Shelbyville Head-On Car Accident Kills 1, Injures 2

A 25-year-old man died and a 45-year-old man and 1-year-old child were injured after a two-vehicle head-on car crash in Shelbyville, Tennessee, early Friday.

According to a report by wkrn.com, the accident occurred just after 7:30 a.m. near Highway 130 in Bedford County. A spokesperson with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said that the 25-year-old man was traveling west on Highway 64 when his vehicle went over the yellow line and into the eastbound lane facing oncoming traffic.

Shortly after crossing the center line, his vehicle collided head-on with a Ford pickup truck.

The impact of the accident killed Frasier and also caused the two occupants of the truck—a 45-year-old man from Lewisburg, Tennessee, and a 1-year-old child—to suffer serious injuries.

Police stated that there is no clear indication as to why the 25-year-old man’s vehicle crossed over into oncoming traffic at the time of the accident.

The Shelbyville car accident lawyers at Matt Hardin Law extend our condolences to the family of the man who died in this accident, and we also hope the other two victims are able to recover from their injuries.

How Can You Avoid a Head-On Collision?

Head-on collisions are the biggest fears of many drivers, and for good reason—because of the forces created by two vehicles colliding at high speed, the risk of suffering serious and even life-threatening injuries is high. To reduce your chances of being involved in a head-on collision, consider the following tips the next time you get behind the wheel:

  • Drive away from the center line.

Whether you’re on a two-lane road or on a highway with multiple lanes, driving close to the yellow line means you may pass other speeding vehicles merely inches away. If you have enough room, always drive with extra space between your vehicle and the center line, even if it means driving in the far right lane. Having extra space between your vehicle and oncoming traffic can make a big difference when it comes to your risk of being involved in a head-on accident.

  • Don’t drive while distracted.

In many cases, head-on collisions are caused by a brief lapse in concentration that causes vehicles to slightly pass over the center line and strike oncoming traffic. All it takes is a split second of looking away or not controlling the steering wheel to cause a head-on accident. That’s why it’s so important for all drivers to keep their eyes and ears focused on the road at all times by avoiding things like texting, talking on the phone, or changing CDs and radio stations.

  • Never pass another vehicle on a two-lane road unless absolutely necessary.

Passing another vehicle on a two-lane road is extremely dangerous, even in situations where it’s not illegal. Even if the adjacent lane is clear as far as you can see, the act of overtaking a vehicle and passing it on the roadway can take several seconds—and during that time, another vehicle may appear in your line of sight before you have a chance to correct or move back into the other lane.

While it’s not always possible to completely eliminate the risk of being involved in a car accident, following the tips above can help reduce your chances and keep you and your family safer on Tennessee’s roadways.
