Wrong-Way Accident Kills One in Hermitage

A 48-year-old woman died in a wrong-way car accident in Hermitage, Tennessee, early Thursday morning.

A staff report by wkrn.com indicates that the accident occurred at the 5000 block of Old Hickory Boulevard and close to the intersection of Lebanon Road shortly after midnight.

Nashville Metro Police told reporters that the woman was headed south in her Honda Civic while driving in northbound lanes when she collided head-on with a Jeep. The impact of the collision caused her to suffer fatal injuries.

The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries during the collision and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

An investigation into the accident revealed that both women were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, and that the driver of the Jeep had her dog in the vehicle at the time of the accident, but it was uninjured during the collision.

Police are also currently investigating whether alcohol or drug intoxication may have contributed to the crash.

The Hermitage car accident attorneys at Matt Hardin Law express their condolences to the family and friends of the woman who was killed in this tragic accident.

How Can You Avoid Head-On Collisions?

Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of collisions drivers can experience. In fact, most head-on collisions involve injuries that are either disabling or even fatal, and almost all of them require immediate medical attention. While it’s impossible to completely eliminate your chances of being involved in a head-on collision, you can reduce the risks by following a few safety tips:

  • Never pass other vehicles on two-lane roads.

It’s not uncommon to get stuck behind a slow driver on a two-lane road, especially when you’re driving in rural areas. And while traffic laws permit drivers to pass when the center line on their side of the road isn’t solid yellow, passing another vehicle is always risky—even if it’s technically legal. Never put yourself or your family at risk to save a few minutes when traveling to your destination.

  • Stay away from the center line on curvy or narrow roads.

Many roads in Middle Tennessee feature sections that are curvy, narrow, or both. Those roads should be handled with extreme caution—especially when going around a blind turn. In the interests or protecting yourself and your family, always drive as far from the center line as possible. By giving other vehicles extra room, you can help significantly reduce your risk of being involved in a head-on collision.

  • Keep your headlights on at all times—even during the day.

Many drivers only turn their headlights on at dusk or at night, but driving with them on at all times makes you more visible to other drivers even during the middle of the day. By keeping your headlights on, other drivers will be more alert to your presence and less likely to drift across the center line or turn left in front of you at an intersection. The more visible you are when driving in traffic, the less likely you are to be involved in a serious head-on collision.

These are just a few of the tips drivers should follow to reduce their risks of accidents. In addition to these, drivers should also observe all traffic laws by not speeding, coming to a complete stop at stop signs, and waiting for a protected arrow or a completely clear lane before making a left turn at an intersection.
