1 Killed after Vehicle Collides Head-On with MTA Bus in Nashville

A 30-year-old man suffered fatal injuries after his vehicle crossed the center line on Charlotte Avenue in Nashville Wednesday morning and collided head-on with an MTA bus.

According to a report by wsmv.com, the accident occurred around 6 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Charlotte Avenue near 19th Avenue North.

Witnesses of the accident said the driver of the red 2004 Toyota Solara appeared to never apply his brakes before colliding with the bus. Investigators with the Nashville Metro Police Department say that traffic camera footage leads them to believe that the man either fell asleep or suffered from a sudden medical emergency while behind the wheel.

Preliminary investigations also indicate that there was no evidence of alcohol or drug use playing a role in the accident.

The 61-year-old driver of the MTA bus was uninjured during the accident, while one of the five passengers onboard at the time suffered a cut to her forehead.

The collision caused police to divert westbound traffic on Charlotte Avenue for several hours as they worked to investigate the crash and clear the accident.

At Matt Hardin Law, our Nashville car accident lawyers express our condolences to the family of the man who was killed in this tragic accident.

What Causes Head-On Collisions?

Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of car accidents. Drivers and passengers involved in head-on collisions often suffer serious, life-changing, and even life-threatening injuries. Although it’s impossible to completely eliminate your chances of ever being involved in a head-on collision, it is possible to reduce your chances by being aware of the most common causes of these severe accidents:

  • Losing consciousness behind the wheel

Whether it’s due to a medical emergency, a known medical condition, a prescription medication, or simply extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation, drivers who lose consciousness behind the wheel even momentarily may allow their vehicles to cross the center line and strike another vehicle head-on. In many cases, drifting just a few inches towards oncoming traffic is all it takes to cause a head-on collision.

  • Slick roads and poor visibility

Weather conditions like heavy rainfall, ice and snow accumulation, and fog can cause drivers to have difficulty seeing the road and maintaining control of their vehicle. Drivers that lose control of their vehicles during inclement weather may spin out and end up drifting into oncoming traffic, putting them at serious risk of being involved in a head-on collision or even being t-boned by another vehicle.

  • Tire blowouts and failures

Aside from bad weather, one of the biggest causes of drivers losing control of their vehicles is tire blowouts and failures. Suddenly depressurization in a front or rear tire can cause a vehicle to suddenly drift hard to the left or right and be extremely difficult to correct within a short timeframe. While drivers are advised to take their foot of the gas and allow the vehicle to gradually slow down, that may be impossible if the blowout happens in heavy traffic—which can also put them at serious risk of being involved in a head-on collision.
