Nashville Man Facing DUI and Hit-and-Run Charges after Accident in Antioch

A Nashville man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he caused an accident while under the influence of alcohol and then left the scene.

According to a report by WKRN.com, the man ran a red light at the intersection of Murfreesboro and Hamilton Church roads in Antioch, Tennessee. While passing through the intersection, he collided with a white sedan, but left before emergency responders could arrive.

Officers caught up to the man about one mile away from the hit-and-run accident and took him into custody on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of a crash.

How Can Hit-and-Run Victims Improve Their Chances of Getting Compensation?

At Matt Hardin Law, our Nashville car accident lawyers know that hit-and-run victims often feel helpless after their accidents—especially if the driver hasn’t been identified yet.

However, it’s important for drivers and passengers who are involved in hit-and-run accidents to stay alert and provide police with as much information as possible to help them locate the driver who caused the accident. Some of the best things victims can do in these types of accidents include:

  • Memorizing all or part of the license plate number

Although it can be difficult to see or memorize the license plate number of another vehicle that was involved in your hit-and-run accident, remembering even just a few details, such as a novelty plate or the first few numbers or letters can help police in their search for the driver.

  • Remembering details about the vehicle

It’s also important to make a mental note of the type of vehicle that caused the accident. Things like the make, model, color, and any other defining characteristics of the vehicle can help paint a more complete picture that police can use when searching nearby roadways to find the person who caused the accident.

  • Talking to witnesses

If you’re able to get out of your vehicle and speak to witnesses, do so as soon as possible. Not only can witnesses help prove your innocence to the insurance company, but they also may remember details about the other driver and his or her vehicle that you never noticed. Before you or any witnesses leave the accident scene, be sure to get their contact information as well.

  • Writing down what happened

A car accident can leave you in a state of shock that can make it difficult to remember the details of what just happened. Keep a pen and piece of paper handy in your vehicle to write down as many details about the accident as you can remember. As time passes, it may be more and more difficult to remember those details, so the sooner you write them down, the better the chances are that police will be able to find the driver.

  • Calling the police

In many cases, police can track down and arrest hit-and-run drivers within minutes of the accident—but only if they are notified shortly after the accident occurs. If you wait too long to contact police, the search radius for the driver will grow and it may lengthen the time it takes for police to find him or her.
