3 Middle School Students Injured in Bus Accident

A Monday morning bus accident in Nashville caused three middle school students and the bus driver to suffer minor injuries and require treatment at a local hospital.

According to a report by wsmv.com, the accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. near the Nashville International Airport at the intersection of Depp Woods Trail and Deep Woods Court. Reports state that the bus hit a small dip in the road, causing students to lunge forward and suffer injuries due to their backpacks striking their bodies.

Another bus accident also occurred Monday morning at the intersection of Elm Hill and Donelson pikes in the Donelson area of Nashville.

Nashville Metro Police say that in the second accident, the bus driver turned left in front of an oncoming car. The car struck the bus, then veered out of control and struck two additional vehicles. There were two children on the second bus who weren’t injured, but several other people involved in the accident were taken to the hospital for treatment.

No charges have been filed against either bus driver, but the driver of the second bus may be charged with failure to yield right of way.

The Nashville bus accident lawyers at Matt Hardin Law are thankful that no one was seriously injured in either of these accidents, and we hope everyone who did suffer minor injuries recovers quickly.

How Can You Keep Your Child Safe on the Bus?

If your child rides a bus to or from school, you know that it can be difficult to trust his or her safety to bus drivers responsible for hundreds of children day in and day out. But there are a few things your child can do to better protect himself while they’re on the bus, including the following tips:

  • Make sure your child stays in his or her seat.

Let your child know that’s important that they stay in their seat at all times during the bus ride. Not only do most bus drivers and school systems have rules requiring children to stay in their seats, but children who stand up while the bus in motion also put themselves at serious risk of suffering injuries in the event of an accident.

  • Tell your child how to operate emergency exits.

School buses are equipped with emergency exits that can be opened in the event of an accident that causes the bus exit to be inoperable. However, many children are unfamiliar with how to open these exits. Use online resources or speak with your child’s bus driver to help him or her better understand how to react if they are involved in a bus accident and need to use an emergency exit to escape from the bus.

  • Make sure your child wears a seat belt if one is available.

Also many school buses aren’t equipped with seat belts, some school districts require them on all forms of transportation for students. If your child’s school district has buses with seat belts, make sure they wear it at all times. You can set a positive example by wearing a seat belt in the car. By seeing you buckle up, your child will be more likely to buckle up when they are riding a bus or traveling in a vehicle by themselves.

Overall, school buses are safe ways to get children to and from school and after school activities, but a few precautions and education for your child can keep him or her safe during their daily commute.
