43 Million Americans Estimated to Travel During Independence Day Weekend

Summer is always the busiest time of year for travelers in Tennessee and throughout the United States, and 2016 is no exception, as a record number of Americans—43 million—are expected to travel over the Fourth of July weekend.

According to a report by WKRN.com, 43 million travelers is an increase of around 500,000 compared to 2015. A study found that of the 43 million travelers, 36 million will travel via automobile.

One reason for the increase in the number of travelers is low gas prices, which are currently 45 cents lower for one gallon than they were one year ago. Gas prices are also currently at their lowest rate in 11 years.

3.43 million travelers in the United States will get to their destinations via air travel, which is an increase of two percent compared to last year.

Insurance provider AAA also says that around 370,000 Americans will request roadside assistance over the holiday weekend due to things like dead batteries, lockouts, and flat tires. That’s why they recommend that all drivers check their vehicles and make any necessary repairs or replacements before they begin their journeys.

Safe Driving Tips for Summer Travel

Summer is a great time to take a family vacation, but it can also be a more dangerous time to be on the roadway due to the increase number of travelers and heavy traffic volume. Because of the large number of vehicles on interstates and highways in Tennessee and throughout the country, the risk of accidents is increased.

To help reduce your risks of being involved in an accident this summer, do your best to follow these tips:

  • Get your vehicle inspected by a qualified technician.

Traveling a long distance can put significant strain on your vehicle, and when key components break down, especially in high-speed or heavy traffic, it can put you and your family at risk. Take your vehicle to a trusted mechanic and have it inspected to avoid any potential problems when you are thousands of miles from home.

  • Plan your route ahead of time.

While many smartphones and vehicles are equipped with GPS navigation systems, it’s important to be prepared for your trip by knowing the route you’re going to take before you leave your home. Being familiar with the interstates and highways you’ll take makes you less dependent on your GPS, which in turn makes you less prone to being distracted.

  • Make sure everyone in your vehicle stays buckled up at all times.

During long trips, it’s common for children to become restless and antsy. However, make sure they understand how important it is to stay buckled up at all times. If necessary, make frequent stops to allow everyone in your vehicle to get out and stretch their legs, use the restroom, or make phone calls.

  • Pull over and rest as soon as you feel sleepy.

Many drivers are tempted to complete their trips as quickly as possible, and that means sometimes condensing a trip that would normally take two days into a single marathon driving session. Driving while sleepy or exhausted is extremely dangerous and can increase your risk of being in an accident to the same degree as driving while intoxicated. If you feel tired, pull over and switch drivers or rest at an inn.
