4 Essential Steps to Take after an Auto Accident

At Matt Hardin Law, our Clarksville auto accident lawyers know that you may be confused and shaken up after a vehicle collision. These events are traumatic and can leave you and your loved ones hurting and dealing with serious injuries—not to mention expensive medical bills and vehicle repair costs. And while the most important thing you can do after an accident is look after your health and your recovery, there are a few important steps you can take to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your rights to compensation.

  • Call 911 and cooperate with police and emergency responders

Tennessee law requires that all accidents that involve property damage or injuries be reported to the police. After a crash, it’s important to immediately call 911 and provide the dispatcher with the information he or she needs to get police and emergency responders to your location as soon as possible. That means information like street where the accident happened, nearby landmarks and intersections, and the number of vehicles involved.

  • Go to the hospital or get treated by a doctor

If you or a loved one suffered injuries during the crash, you need medical attention right away. Auto accident victims may not realize the severity of their injuries right away due to adrenaline and shock. Allow the emergency responders to transport you or your loved one to a hospital via an ambulance or go see a healthcare professional on your own as soon as possible.

  • Report the accident to your insurance provider

To be eligible for compensation after a crash, you must report it to your auto insurance provider. However, it’s important to be careful during this step and avoid admitting fault. Insurance adjusters often use people’s words against them when reducing or denying claims. Stick to the facts and be honest, but avoid volunteering information that the adjuster doesn’t ask for.

  • Contact an experienced Clarksville auto accident lawyer

The insurance company may begin building its defense against you and your claim as soon as it finds out about the accident. It’s important to level the playing field by having a law firm with a track record of success on your side. Without it, seeking compensation for your medical bills and lost wages can be an uphill and unfair battle.
