TDOT Begins Preparation for Construction Project Planned for I-24 this Fall

Posted in Car Accident,Tennessee Accident Law on June 20, 2017

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has begun preparing for a major construction project that will significantly impact drivers who travel on Interstate 24 in Nashville later this year.

Per a report by WKRN.com, the project involves the replacement of two bridges along I-24 that cross over Oldham Street and Spring Street in Davidson County. The plan also involves repairing the Silliman Evans Bridge.

To complete the repairs, TDOT plans to close sections of I-24 over the course of four weekends during the fall. Although the specific dates for the closures haven’t been decided, TDOT wants to warn drivers as early as possible that they will need to take detours if they travel through Nashville on I-24 in the fall.

A spokesperson with TDOT says that the agency has detour maps to help drivers and travelers navigate around interstate closures. The first meeting about the project was held at the North Nashville Precinct at 6 p.m. on Monday, and a second meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 27, at the East Park Community Center.

Tips for Avoiding Road Closure Headaches and Delays

Whether it’s during your daily commute or during a summer road trip, running into a road closure can be frustrating and time-consuming. It can even be dangerous if you aren’t expecting it—especially if you come across a road closure at night or during inclement weather.

A few tips you can follow to avoid the hassles and headaches of road closures include:

  • Check for road closures online

While your GPS or smartphone are great for navigating you to your destination, they may not have the latest road conditions and information—including road closures. Instead of relying on these devices exclusively, check for road closures in your area or along your route. The official Tennessee state website includes a page with information about road closures that’s updated weekly.

  • Program your GPS or smartphone to avoid the road closure

After you become aware of a road closure, it’s important to update your navigational devices with that information. Most devices include features that allow you to bypass certain sections of roads, highways, and interstates to avoid accidents and road closures. This step can save you time and frustration, as your navigational device will automatically reroute you via detours that will help you avoid traffic backups.

  • Prepare your vehicle with snacks, drinks, and other supplies for unexpected closures

Road closures aren’t always planned. Emergency responders may block off lanes and entire roads in response to things like accidents, inclement weather—including ice, rain, and fog—and environmental hazards, such as rock slides, downed trees, and floods. In some cases, you may be unable to turn around or detour, especially if encounter the road closure on a highway or interstate. Preparing your vehicle with snacks and drinks will help you stay comfortable while you wait for the road to reopen.

If you reach a road closure and you’re unsure what to do, check the area for signs or anyone directing traffic. Follow their instructions, whether it’s to wait and pass through the closure when it’s safe to do so, or to turn around and detour via another road to get your destination.
