Bell Buckle Woman Killed in Head-On Crash in Shelbyville

A woman died Monday night after she was involved in a head-on collision while driving the wrong way on U.S. 231 North in Shelbyville, Tennessee, near Blackberry Ridge Golf Course.

According to a report by the Times-Gazette, the 47-year-old woman, who was from Bell Buckle, Tennessee, was driving southbound on the highway when she suddenly crossed the grassy median and collided with a northbound car driven by a 25-year-old woman from Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The accident caused the woman from Murfreesboro to suffer serious injuries and she was airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center to receive treatment.

Tennessee Highway Patrol officials stated that the accident pinned both women in their vehicles for an extended period of time and blocked the northbound lanes for U.S. 231 for around one hour. Fortunately, no passengers were in either vehicle at the time of the accident.

The Murfreesboro car accident attorneys at Matt Hardin Law extended their condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life in this accident, and we also hope the other victim recovers from her injuries.

What are the Differences between Ambulances and Airlifts?

Auto accident victims who suffer serious injuries almost always need immediate medical attention. However, some victims are transported to the hospital by ambulance, while others are transported by helicopter. While both services are capable of saving lives, there are a few key differences between them:

  • Airlift services can get victims to the hospital very quickly.

Because they don’t have to navigate roads or traffic, helicopter-based ambulances have the ability to reach victims much more quickly than standard ambulances. The difference between reaching a victim in 25 minutes and reaching him or her in 10 minutes can sometimes be the difference between life and death. Airlift services can also stabilize victims more quickly and get them back to the hospital for life-saving surgery or treatment.

  • Airlift services can reach remote areas without difficulty.

While the majority of car accidents occur in heavily populated areas or on roadways that are easily accessible to ambulances, sometimes accidents happen in regions where it’s difficult or time-consuming for emergency crews to arrive. Airlift services can bypass any potential hazards or obstacles and reach the victim in time to perform life-saving interventions.

  • Airlift services often have doctors on board.

While most traditional ambulance services have highly trained paramedics or emergency medical services workers onboard, these medical professionals may not be trained to treat a victim’s entire range of injuries or medical conditions. Having a doctor onboard airlift services helicopters can mean victims can receive a full range of treatment and diagnosis of their injuries, as well as continuity of care from the accident scene all the way to their hospital bed.

At Matt Hardin Law, our Murfreesboro car accident lawyers are thankful that many auto accident victims in the Middle Tennessee area can receive life-saving treatment within minutes, and we know that many of our clients’ lives were saved because of such prompt medical attention. However, we also know that airlift services can come with a hefty price tag—especially if victims don’t carry sufficient insurance.
