Free Car Seat Checks Offered by Murfreesboro Fire Department
Car seats are only at their most effective when they are in good condition and used correctly, and the Murfreesboro Fire Department will hold an event on Thursday, Sept. 17, to help parents make sure their children are well protected any time they ride in the car.
According to a report by wkrn.com, the event will take place at Station 9 on Cason Lane in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the Child Passenger Safety Week. Another event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Toys R Us store on Old Fort Parkway from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A spokesperson for the Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue Department says that car crashes are the leading causes of death for children, and that safety seats, when used correctly, can reduce the risk of fatal injuries by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers.
The MFDR will allow parents who can’t make either of the two planned events to set up appointments by contacting them directly by dialing (615) 893-1422.
Important Safety Tips for Using a Car Seat
If you have young children, you know how important it is use to always place them in car seats or booster seats when they ride in your car. And while using car seats on their own helps reduce their risk of injuries in a car accident, it’s also important that you use their car seats correctly. Some important safety tips that you and your loved ones should follow when riding with small children in the car include:
Rear-facing car seats are much safer for infants and young children than standard car seats. Always use these this type of car seat until your child either reaches the age of 2 or reaches the appropriate height and weight to move up to a standard car seat.
If your child requires a rear-facing car seat, always place it in the backseat of the car away from airbags. If an airbag deploys and impacts the car seat, it can cause your child to suffer serious injuries.
Whether they’re using a rear-facing safety seat, a standard car seat, or a booster seat, always take the time to fully read the manual before using it in your vehicle. Reading the manual makes it much easier to properly set up the safety seat and will also give you peace of mind by knowing that your child is fully protected in the event of a car accident.
Buying secondhand or using hand-me-down safety seats can put your child in danger. These safety seats may be worn down, missing vital components, or simply outdated and not as safe as modern safety seats. Always buy brand new safety seats and if any parts are missing or appear damaged, return the unit and replace it before use.
Protecting the safety of your children is your top priority every time they ride in your car. And while these tips can help dramatically improve the safety of your children, it’s important that you ask the right questions and get the right advice if you’re still unsure of how to best use or inspect child safety seats. That’s why events like the ones being conducted by the MFRD can be so helpful for parents who want to make sure their children are protected.
