Head-On Collision in Smyrna Kills 1, Injures 2

A head-on collision on Nissan Drive claimed one life and seriously injured two other people Tuesday night in Smyrna, Tennessee.

According to a report by wsmv.com, the accident occurred when a Saturn Ion driven by a 34-year-old man was traveling southbound on Nissan Drive when it suddenly veered into oncoming traffic near Sam Davis Road.

The Smyrna Police Department says that shortly after entering the lane with oncoming traffic, the Saturn Ion collided head-on with a Nissan Pathfinder driven by a 38-year-old woman. The impact of the accident caused the 34-year-old driver of the Saturn Ion to suffer fatal injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The 38-year-old driver of the Nissan was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment for her injuries, while her 38-year-old male passenger was taken to Stonecrest Medical Center nearby for treatment of his injuries. He was treated and released.

The Smyrna car accident lawyers at Matt Hardin Law express our sincere condolences to the family of the man who lost his life in this accident, and we also hope the other two victims experience complete and quick recoveries from their injuries.

What are the Causes of Head-On Collisions?

Head-on collisions are capable of causing debilitating and life-threatening injuries to victims. Because of the often violent nature of these accidents, many people wonder how they happen in the first place. Some of the most common causes of head-on collisions include:

  • Distracted driving

A driver who takes his eyes of the wheel for even a split second could allow his vehicle to drift several feet and cross the center line into the path of oncoming traffic. Because so little separates vehicles on most roadways, even a momentary lapse in concentrate is all it takes to go from safely traveling in a lane to slamming head first into another speeding vehicle headed in the opposite direction.

  • Wrong-way driving

Another common cause of head-on collisions is when drivers enter interstates, highways, or other roadways going the wrong way. This happens when drivers get confused, are driving late at night and can’t see signs, or are driving while intoxicated. Wrong-way driving is extremely dangerous, especially on high speed roadways like interstates, as other drivers may not have enough time to react when they see another vehicle headed towards them on a one-way street.

  • Left-hand turns into oncoming traffic

Sometimes drivers aren’t paying attention at intersections and make a left turn after seeing a green light. However, green lights at intersections only mean it’s okay to turn left if the coast is clear. Drivers who turn without looking to see if there is oncoming traffic in the adjacent lane are a big cause of deadly head-on collisions, as their sudden movement into the paths of speeding vehicles can make it difficult or even impossible for other drivers to avoid hitting them.
