Per a report by WKRN.com, the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Smith Springs Road near Ned Shelton Road. The driver left the scene without stopping his or her vehicle, and the bicyclist was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to receive treatment for life-threatening injuries.

Investigators with the MNPD closed Smith Springs Road as they investigated the crash. Drivers who passed through the area were rerouted to Nashboro Boulevard to avoid the closure.

How Do Police Find Hit-and-Run Drivers?

Victims of hit-and-run accidents often feel frustrated, angry, and helpless when the person who injured them fails to stop. In many cases, victims can only provide police with a partial description of the person or vehicle that hit them, and in other cases, they may have been completely blindsided and be unable to provide any information at all.

Thankfully, police officers and investigators can track down many hit-and-run drivers by utilizing evidence and techniques such as:

  • Reviewing accident footage

Whether they utilize footage from a vehicle’s dash cam, an intersection traffic camera, or a security camera mounted on a home or business, police can either identify the vehicle that was involved in an accident or narrow their investigation based on what they see.

  • Analyzing crash scene debris

Almost all accidents leave some form of physical evidence. Everything from small pieces of lights and bumpers to paint smudges and skid marks can all be analyzed by investigators to determine the make, model, and color of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run accident.

  • Alerting body shop owners

Many hit-and-run accidents involve vehicles sustaining serious damage. Police often alert local auto body repair shops about hit-and-run accidents and provide them with information that could help identify the driver, including the type of damage the vehicle incurred, as well as its make, model, and color.

  • Speaking with witnesses

Hit-and-run crashes are often witnessed by multiple people. And while people’s memories of accidents aren’t always reliable, police can piece together information and descriptions from multiple witnesses to create an accurate picture of what happened and what the suspect and his or her vehicle look like.

  • Relying on tips from the public

When police are searching for a hit-and-run driver, they often ask the public for tips and information. Sometimes, people who know the hit-and-run driver will contact police and provide information about the driver’s whereabouts.
