Injuries Reported after Multi-Vehicle Accident on I-65 in Nashville

Posted in Car Accident,Tennessee Accident Law on April 10, 2017

Interstate 65 was briefly shut down by emergency responders following a crash that caused at least one person to suffer injuries early Monday.

Per a report by WKRN.com, the crash occurred at around 5 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-65 at Rosa Parks Boulevard near downtown. An investigation by Metro Nashville Police hasn’t revealed the official cause of the crash, but did indicate that several vehicles were involved, including three passenger vehicles and two tractor-trailers.

However, a witness indicated that the accident occurred when a vehicle was rear-ended by another car. The impact of that collision caused a chain-reaction involving other vehicles.

It’s unknown if anyone else was injured in the accident. The Tennessean reports that the roadway was reopened by around 7:30 a.m. Monday morning.

What Are Common Causes of Multi-Vehicle Accidents?

Single-vehicle and two-vehicle accidents can be extremely dangerous, and when even more vehicles are involved in a crash, the risks that drivers and passengers face only increase. Whether they happen on interstates and highways or parking lots and low-speed roadways, multi-vehicle accidents can cause victims to suffer serious and debilitating injuries.

At Matt Hardin Law, our Nashville auto accident lawyers have built claims for many victims of multi-vehicle crashes, and we know that some of the most common causes include:

  • Bad weather

Many multi-car pileups occur because of inclement weather. Rain creates slick, wet roads that reduce tire traction. That means drivers may lose control and crash into other cars, creating the risk of a chain-reaction accident. Fog can reduce visibility, making it difficult for drivers to slow down to avoid rear-ending other vehicles. And snow and ice can reduce traction and visibility, which means pileups are common during severe winter weather.

  • Distracted driving

Chain-reaction accidents are frequently caused by initial rear-end accidents. When one vehicle is struck from behind by another vehicle, it can be pushed into vehicles in front of it or in the path of oncoming traffic. Rear-end crashes are often the result of distracted drivers, especially drivers who text or check their smartphones while they’re behind the wheel and their vehicles are moving.

  • Speeding

Another prominent cause of multi-vehicle accidents is speeding. When drivers exceed the speed limit, they have less time to react to the things happening around them and their braking distance increases. That means they may be unable to react in time to avoid things like vehicles suddenly braking in front of them, drivers changing lanes in front of them, and traffic lights changing from green to yellow to red.

  • Driving under the influence

Safe driving requires fast reaction times, good judgment, and clear vision. Drivers who are intoxicated experience impairments to all those physical and mental requirements, and that not only increases their risks of being involved in accidents, but it also increases their risk of multi-vehicle crashes. Impaired drivers are more likely to enter roadways heading in the wrong direction, and head-on collisions can frequently involve multiple vehicles.

In addition to being severely damaging to vehicles and carrying a high risk of causing injuries, multi-vehicle accidents can also be complicated when it comes to determining who was at fault. In some cases, it’s obvious who the at-fault driver is, but in other cases, multiple drivers may be to blame for causing the crash.

If you were involved in a multi-vehicle accident, it’s vital that you get an experienced Nashville car accident lawyer on your side as soon as possible.
