Injuries Reported after Tractor-Trailer Struck SUV in Goodlettsville

A tractor-trailer collided with an SUV in the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 in Goodlettsville early Wednesday, causing two people to suffer injuries.

According to a report by WKRN.com, the accident occurred when the tractor-trailer was traveling north on I-65 and suddenly ran off the roadway near East Cedar Street and Long Hollow Pike. After exiting the interstate, the truck crashed into an SUV on a nearby road.

The impact of the collision caused both the driver of the tractor-trailer and the driver of the SUV to suffer injuries. Both drivers were transported by emergency responders to a local hospital to receive treatment, but neither driver’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Police closed East Cedar Street while they worked to clear the accident scene and investigate the collision. No further information has been released at this time.

4 Common Injuries Caused by Truck Accidents

The average passenger vehicle weighs around 4,500 pounds, while tractor-trailers can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. In addition, tractor-trailers are also significantly taller, wider, and longer than even the largest pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of the sheer size differences in these types of vehicles, all drivers are at risk of suffering serious and even life-threatening injuries when they’re involved in accidents with semi-trucks and tractor-trailers.

At Matt Hardin Law, we’ve worked with many innocent truck accident victims over the years, and we know that some of the most common injuries caused by these collisions include the following:

  • Back and neck injuries

The back and neck contain sensitive muscles and tendons that can be damaged during truck accidents. Victims who suffer whiplash and lower back injuries may become disabled and unable to work for long periods of time due to extreme pain and reduced mobility. More severe accidents can cause chipped or broken bones in the neck and back, which can result in extensive time away from work and weeks or months of painful physical rehabilitation.

  • Head and brain injuries

All head injuries have the potential to be serious and even life-changing. Even minor bumps to the head can cause victims to suffer mild concussions—which are categorized as traumatic brain injuries. The impact of truck accidents can cause the brain to contact the inside of the skull with a large amount of force, resulting in bruising, bleeding, and damage that may cause permanent disability and even personality changes.

  • Internal injuries

Some victims of truck accidents may appear to be okay in the immediate aftermath, but their lives could be in danger due to internal injuries. Like brain injuries, internal injuries occur when forces generated by truck accidents cause organs to move and contact each other and areas of the body like the rib cage and abdominal wall at high speeds. The movement and subsequent collisions can cause organs to burst or become damaged, resulting in internal bleeding and organ failure.

  • Cuts and lacerations

Although modern vehicles are built with glass that’s designed to break into tiny pieces when it shatters, drivers and passengers can still suffer serious cuts and lacerations during accidents involving big trucks. Whether caused by broken glass or loose objects inside their vehicles, victims of cuts and lacerations may bleed profusely and need immediate life-saving medical intervention. In addition, these types of injuries can leave scars, which can be distressing for victims.

Other serious injuries that are common during truck accidents include broken bones in the arms, legs, and hips, torn ligaments in the knees and ankles, and injuries to the torso, including broken ribs and punctured lungs.

At Matt Hardin Law, our Nashville truck accident attorneys know that drivers and passengers in cars, pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs are at high risk of suffering serious injuries when their vehicles are struck by tractor-trailers. We also know that victims may feel helpless due to the red tape involved with these types of crashes and the big insurance companies that represent truckers and their employers.
