Man Struck and Killed by TDOT Salt Truck in Lawrence County

A man walking on the side of a road in Lawrence County, Tennessee, early Thursday morning was struck and killed by a salt truck used by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

According to a report by wsmv.com, the accident occurred around midnight Thursday on McKinney Road in Iron City, Tennessee.

The 41-year-old man was walking on the side of the road near his home when the accident occurred. It’s currently unclear where he was going or why he was walking so late at night. Officials say that heavy snowfall in the area at the time of the accident could have reduced visibility and contributed to the accident.

The man’s name hasn’t been released by officials.

The Columbia car accident lawyers at Matt Hardin Law extend their condolences to the family of the man who was killed in this tragic accident.

Tips for Safe Walking at Night

Walking at night can be dangerous—especially in areas with heavy traffic congestion. But sometimes car troubles or other emergencies leave you no choice. If you have to set off on foot for any reason during the evening or night, do your best to follow these tips to increase your visibility and reduce your risk of being involved in an accident:

  • Wear bright and reflective clothing.

Even if you’re walking under street lights, it can be difficult for drivers to see you at night. That’s why it’s important to wear brightly colored clothing, especially clothes that contain reflective materials. These materials reflect light from headlights back at drivers and are very effective at altering them to your presence on the sidewalk or shoulder of the road.

  • Tell people where you are going.

It’s easy to get lost when walking at night—especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area. Before you leave, tell someone where you are planning on walking to, how long it will take you to get there, and when you will be back. Making someone aware of your plans can go a long way toward making sure you get help if an emergency situation arises.

  • Carry a cell phone.

Always take a cell phone with you when you walk at night. Having a cell phone gives you quick and easy access to emergency services by dialing 911. You can also phone a friend or family member if you get lost or need assistance.

  • Walk against the flow of traffic.

Because visibility is poor at night, you will see approaching cars much sooner than they will see you. If possible, walk towards the flow of traffic instead of with the flow of traffic. This gives you a chance to see cars headed towards you and gives you time to react in case one approaches the sidewalk or shoulder too closely.

  • Only cross the street at crosswalks or intersections with traffic lights.

Drivers may not expect to see pedestrians out at night, and crossing the street at areas other than four-way stops, crosswalks, or intersections with traffic lights can be dangerous. Only cross the street at designated spots where it’s safe for pedestrians and look for approaching vehicles—not just headlights—before crossing the street.

Pedestrian accidents are real risks when walking at night, but you can reduce your risks of being involved in a serious accident by following the tips above.
