Martin Luther King Parkway Closed Due to Serious Collision in Clarksville

A collision between a sport utility vehicle and a car caused serious injuries and led to Martin Luther King Parkway closing for around one hour Wednesday.

According to a report by The Leaf-Chronicle, the accident occurred around 4 p.m. close to the intersection of Fire Station Road and Martin Luther King Parkway. The crash caused debris to scatter across the roadway and eastbound lanes to close for one hour, according to a statement from a lieutenant with the Clarksville Police Department.

The impact of the collision caused the SUV to roll over several times, injuring a male passenger inside the vehicle. His injuries required him to be transported to Blanchfield Army Community Hospital. Two other occupants of the SUV and the driver of the car involved in the accident did not suffer serious injuries.

The cause of the accident is currently being investigated by the Clarksville Police Department.

What Safety Features Should You Look for in a New Vehicle?

When it’s time to purchase a new vehicle, safety is one of the top concerns for most buyers. If you’re in the market for a new car and want to keep yourself and your family safe, look for vehicles with these safety features:

  • Adaptive and side air bags

Front air bags have been standard on vehicles nearly 20 years, but their effectiveness and safety have improved significantly then. Look for vehicles that feature both adaptive air bags and side air bags. Adaptive air bags detect the presence, weight, and seat position of drivers and passengers and depower them in response to the weight and size of each person in each seat inside the vehicle. Side air bags protect the torsos of car accident victims while also shielding them from flying debris. In addition, they prevent victims from being ejected during rollover crashes.

  • Traction and electronic stability control

Traction control maintains tire traction with the roadway even during wet and icy conditions, making it much less likely that drivers will lose control of their vehicles when driving during inclement weather. Electronic stability control is a new feature that became standard in 2012. It maintains the intended path of vehicles during turns to avoid sliding and skidding by using a computer and a series of sensors to detect every aspect of a vehicle’s speed, steering angle, and turning radius.

  • Tire-pressure warning systems

As of October 31, 2006, all automakers are required to add tire-pressure warning systems that alert drivers when their drivers are under or over-inflated. Maintaining proper tire pressure is extremely important, especially when driving at high speeds or on uneven roadways, as tires that are under or over-inflated as more prone to blowouts. By knowing your tire pressure at all times, you can drastically reduce your risk of suffering an accident due to a tire failure or blowout.

  • Brake assist systems

Studies have shown that drivers often don’t put enough pressure on their brakes when trying to avoid an accident. Brake assist systems were created to detect emergency braking and apply the maximum amount of pressure in order to stop the vehicle quickly and avoid a possible collision. When combined with anti-lock brakes, brake assist system dramatically increase the effectiveness of brakes in modern vehicles.

The Clarksville car accident attorneys at Matt Hardin Law believe that modern vehicles can’t be too safe or have too many safety features. While it’s impossible to completely eliminate car accidents in the near future, advanced safety features make it possible for drivers and passengers to survive accidents that might have been life-threatening or fatal just a few years ago.
