Memphis Man Dies after Getting Struck by Vehicle on Interstate 40

A Memphis man was attempting to cross Interstate 40 in Memphis, Tennessee, Wednesday night when he was struck by a vehicle and died.

According to a report by wmcactionnews5.com, the accident occurred when the man stopped his car on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Appling Road. He then exited his vehicle and began walking cross the interstate toward a sheriff’s deputy with the Shelby County Police Department who was in the process of conducting a traffic stop.

While crossing four lanes of traffic, the man was struck by a vehicle and then run over by another vehicle. Emergency medical crews pronounced the man dead at the scene of the accident.

Police say they have not determined why the man stopped his vehicle and attempted to cross traffic to reach the sheriff’s deputy.

The Memphis car accident lawyers at Matt Hardin Law express our condolences to the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this tragic accident.

Safely Stopping Your Vehicle on the Highway or Interstate

If you’re ever in a situation where you have to stop your vehicle on a highway or interstate, it’s important that you understand the risks involved and how to keep you and your family safe by following these tips:

  • Pull your vehicle over as far as possible.

Although the side of the road or shoulder may seem like a safe place to stop your vehicle, you’re still in harm’s way—especially if another driver accidentally swerves too far in your direction. To minimize your risk when you pull your vehicle over, stop as far as possible away from traffic and only do so when there’s ample room for your vehicle.

  • Stay in your vehicle if possible.

The safest place to be on the side of the road is inside your vehicle. Leaving your vehicle puts you at risk of being struck by cars in oncoming traffic. If you are experiencing car troubles, stay inside your vehicle and call for help. Never attempt to change a flat tire or do routine car maintenance on the side of a busy highway or interstate, as doing so can put you at serious risk of suffering a life-threatening or even fatal injury.

  • Never attempt to cross multiple lanes of traffic.

Even if there’s a gap in oncoming traffic, you should never attempt to cross multiple lanes of a busy highway or interstate. Due to the high rates of speed of oncoming vehicles, what looks like a clear shot across several lanes on foot can quickly become an extremely dangerous situation. If you see something that might require you to cross multiple lanes of traffic, such as a traffic accident, stop your vehicle in a safe place and call 911 instead.

At Matt Hardin Law, our Memphis car accident lawyers urge drivers to stay in their vehicles on multi-lane interstates and highways and to never cross traffic for any reason. Emergencies should be dealt with safely by dialing 911 and waiting for rescue crews and police to arrive, as they’re trained to safely deal with accidents in the presence of high-speed traffic.
