Memphis Police Car Involved in Accident with SUV near Midtown
A Memphis police cruiser was involved in an accident that caused an SUV to flip over onto its side Monday afternoon.
According to a report by wmcactionnews5.com, the accident occurred when the squad car crashed into a red SUV near the intersection of Peabody Avenue and South Rembert Street in the midtown area of Memphis. The impact of the collision caused the SUV to roll onto its side and the two occupants of the vehicle to suffer injuries.
A spokesperson for the Memphis Police Department confirmed that one of its patrol cars was involved in the accident but said that the department is unsure of the cause of the accident at this time.
Residents of the neighborhood said that crashes at the intersection are a common occurrence, with three happening around the same area in recent weeks.
The Memphis car accident attorneys at Matt Hardin Law hope the people who were injured in this accident experience quick and complete recoveries from their injuries.
Safety Tips for Driving through Intersections
Intersections are among the most dangerous spots on the road for drivers. While the majority of intersections use yield signs, stop signs, and traffic lights to control the flow of traffic, they’re still one of the most common locations for accidents. To do your part in staying safe at intersections, check out the following safety tips:
It’s required by law for all drivers to come to a complete stop at stop signs. That law isn’t designed to simply increase traffic citations—it’s designed to save lives. Rolling through a stop sign doesn’t give you enough time to check and make sure the intersection is clear. You should always come to a complete stop and look both ways twice before entering the intersection.
Although the rule of the road holds that drivers get the right of way at four-way stops based on when they arrive at the intersection, not all drivers are aware of that. That’s why it’s important to make eye contact with other drivers at the intersection when it’s your turn to go and be extra cautious when crossing the street or turning. If another driver seems intent on pulling out into the intersection at the same time as you, give him or her the right of way to avoid an accident.
Although turning right on red is legal in most cases, there are certain intersections that may have signs forbidding it. This is often due to low visibility at those intersections or high-speed oncoming traffic. To keep yourself and your family safe, never turn right on red where it’s prohibited, and only turn right on red where it’s allowed if the road is clear.
Although your first instinct at seeing a green light may be to accelerate, it’s safer to wait for a second or two before pulling out into the intersection. By pausing momentarily, you can avoid any previously unseen drivers who may be trying to beat the red light. Many serious accidents at intersections are caused by drivers running red lights, but waiting for a short time period can reduce your chances of being involved in such an accident significantly.
Although you can’t control the behavior of other drivers, you can control your reaction to their driving habits and your own cautious driving skills behind the wheel. At Matt Hardin Law, we believe that the best drivers are defensive drivers—and that means always being aware of what other drivers are doing to help avoid causing or being involved in serious accidents.
