Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-65 Results in 6 People Suffering Injuries

An accident involving multiple vehicles caused six people to suffer injuries Friday night around 11:30 p.m.

According to a report by WKRN.com, the accident occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 in Nashville near exit 86, just north of the downtown area and near the Cumberland River.

A spokesperson with Nashville Metro Police told reporters that the accident involved a total of four vehicles and that six people were transported to local hospitals to receive treatment for their injuries. However, none of the victims are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident at this time, and no further information has been released.

Portions of I-65 were closed this weekend in Nashville, including the left lane of the northbound side of the interstate. The closures extended from mile marker 86 to mile marker 91 and began Friday at 9 p.m. and ended around noon on Sunday.

The closures, which were scheduled to allow road crews a chance to hang overhead signs, affected traffic and caused delays throughout the weekend.

What Are Common Causes of Multi-Vehicle Accidents?

When there are several vehicles traveling closely together, any accident has the chance of becoming a multi-vehicle accident. At Matt Hardin Law, our Nashville auto accident attorneys know that multi-vehicle accidents often lead to serious injuries for victims—especially when vehicles are struck multiple times and from different angles by other cars, trucks, and SUVs. While it’s impossible to completely prevent multi-vehicle accidents, understanding their causes can help drivers like you reduce your risks when traveling on the highways and interstates in Middle Tennessee:

  • Drivers following other vehicles too closely

In order for vehicles to slow down or stop on high-speed roadways like highways and interstates, drivers need to have sufficient time to react to what’s occurring in front of them and their brakes need time to work. When drivers follow other vehicles too closely, there’s often simply not enough time for them to react to the flow of traffic ahead of them. Tailgating can cause rear-end accidents—and in heavy traffic, that can quickly lead to multi-vehicle pile-ups that cause serious injuries.

  • Drivers getting distracted by accidents

The aftermaths of auto accidents aren’t just dangerous for the people involved—they’re also dangerous for other drivers. Many drivers have a natural tendency to look at accident scenes while they’re behind the wheel, especially if the accidents just occurred, but doing so is highly distracting and can cause them to lose their focus on the road. The risk of multi-vehicle accidents is even greater in the moments immediately after initial accidents when the victims’ vehicles are still fully or partially in the way of oncoming traffic.

  • Drivers speeding or engaging in reckless behaviors

Drivers who exhibit aggressive and reckless behaviors, such as speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, drifting in their lanes, or taking their attention off the road are all high-risk factors for causing multi-vehicle accidents. When accidents occur at high speed, or when drivers make sudden and unpredictable movements, they often cause other drivers to swerve or suddenly slam on their brakes, putting them at serious risk of crashing into vehicles near them and causing a chain-reaction effect.

Because multi-vehicle accidents are so dangerous, the victims of these types of crashes often suffer disabling injuries than can put them out of work for weeks, months, or even years. People who are injured in multi-vehicle accidents have the option of filing claims for compensation, but it can be difficult to prove who was responsible for the crashes—especially if multiple drivers were being negligent.

Our legal team has two decades of experience building claims for drivers who were injured in multi-vehicle accidents, and we know how to collect, analyze, and present evidence that pinpoints the drivers who are responsible for causing these dangerous crashes.
