Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Dump Truck Kills 1 in Murfreesboro

A crash near the Murfreesboro airport involving three vehicles—including a dump truck—killed one person Monday afternoon in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

According to a report by wsmv.com, the accident occurred just after noon when three vehicles were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Airport Road and Memorial Boulevard. Murfreesboro Police say that while the vehicles were stopped, an approaching dump truck rear-ended a pickup truck, causing the pickup truck to strike another vehicle, which in turn caused that car to strike another vehicle as well.

The chain-reaction accident caused the driver of the pickup truck to suffer severe injuries, and he was transported by LifeFlight to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after the accident.

Murfreesboro Police also stated that neither the driver of the dump truck nor the other two drivers involved in the multi-vehicle crash suffered serious injuries. The accident caused Memorial Boulevard to shut down for several hours while emergency workers and road crews worked to clear the accident scene.

The accident is currently under investigation to determine its cause.

The Murfreesboro truck accident lawyers at Matt Hardin Law express our condolences to the family of the man who lost his life in this tragic accident.

What Causes Multi-Vehicle Collisions?

Pile-ups and chain-reaction crashes are some of the most dangerous types of car accidents that drivers and passengers can experience. Instead of being subjected to a single point of impact, victims of multi-vehicle collisions experience impacts from multiple angles, which significantly increases their risks of suffering serious injuries.

Some of the most common causes of these types of accidents include:

  • Low visibility

Conditions like fog, heavy rainfall, and night driving can make it difficult for drivers to see vehicles in front of them or in the lanes next to them. Low visibility can be especially dangerous when drivers approach traffic jams or vehicles stopped at intersections, as they may not see the vehicles up ahead until it’s too late to slow or down or stop.

  • Slick road conditions

Ice, snow, rain, oil, and other road hazards can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles and slide into other vehicles. If the road is slippery enough, this can turn a single accident into a chain-reaction accident that involves several vehicles. Pile-ups during winter weather are especially common, as drivers lose control of their vehicles while avoiding accidents happening around them.

  • Sudden slowdowns in traffic

Traffic on interstates and highways flows smoothly with most vehicles traveling at roughly the same speed. When a driver slams on his or her brakes in heavy traffic for any reason, it can cause a chain-reaction of braking, and any drivers who don’t slow down in time can rear-end the vehicles in front of them, causing a serious multi-vehicle accident.

  • Evacuations and natural disasters

Although rare, situations that require people in populated areas to evacuate can lead to multi-vehicle accidents, as the roads can become clogged with much more traffic than normal. Sudden increases in traffic and vehicle density can cause pile-ups, which create even more traffic and slowdowns.
