Multiple Injuries Reported after Truck Carrying Milk Collides with Vehicle

An industrial truck carrying milk was involved in an accident with a passenger vehicle on Interstate 40 East in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, Thursday morning, causing an adult and two children to suffer injuries.

A wkrn.com staff report says the accident occurred around 9 a.m. near mile marker 226 when the truck collided with the vehicle, causing milk and fuel to begin leaking onto the roadway from the truck’s trailer.

Due to the accident and the leak, Mt. Juliet police closed lanes of I-40 East for several hours to clean up the mess. Two lanes were reopened by 11 a.m., but the accident scene isn’t expected to be completely cleared until 1 p.m.

Police also stated that the victims of the accident were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to receive treatment for their injuries, which aren’t considered life-threatening at this time.

Matt Hardin Law’s team of Mt. Juliet truck accident attorneys hopes the victims of this accident experience a quick and complete recovery from their injuries.

What Happens When Industrial Trucks Are Involved in Accidents?

Many industrial trucks carry chemicals that are far more dangerous than milk. When those trucks are involved in accidents that cause their contents to leak or spill, the consequences can be extremely dangerous for both the people who were involved in the accident as well as any nearby motorists and even first responders.

The sequence of events that often occur after industrial truck accidents include:

  • First responders will close the affected lanes of traffic.

Trucks carrying potentially toxic, corrosive, flammable, or otherwise dangerous chemicals and gases pose major threats to people if they’re damaged in accidents. That’s why the first course of action after industrial truck accidents is to quarantine the area immediately to prevent motorists from being affected by the leaked chemicals or gases.

  • Government agencies will investigate the accident.

Police are required to investigate all traffic accidents—especially truck accidents—but accidents involving industrial trucks may require more in-depth investigations. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) both may investigate either the accident itself or the trucking company responsible for the truck that was involved in the crash to determine if negligence or rule violations contributed to the accident.

  • Clean-up crews will begin clearing the wreckage and removing spilled chemicals.

Industrial truck accidents aren’t just dangerous—they’re also severe detriments to the flow of traffic on major highways and interstates. Clean-up crews are trained to safely contain and remove chemical spills from industrial trucks quickly and efficiently. While the cleaning process occurs, state troopers and emergency responders may divert traffic away from the accident scene to prevent a major back-up.

  • Police will interview the truck driver and other accident victims.

While filing an accident report, police often interview both the truck driver and any other drivers or victims who were involved in the accident. During this time, police will gather as much information as possible in order to determine who was responsible for the accident and whether that person may face criminal charges due to their role in causing the collision.

Being involved in a truck accident is confusing and frightening as is—but it’s even worse if the accident involves a truck that’s hauling potentially toxic chemicals or gases. These types of truck accidents are not only more dangerous than other types of accidents, but they’re also more complicated for victims to recover compensation. However, having an experienced attorney on their side can dramatically improve their chances of getting money for their accident-related expenses.
