Multiple Injuries Reported after Pedestrian Accident on Interstate 24 West

Two vehicles collided near the Briley Parkway exit and mile marker 54 on Interstate 24 in south Nashville Saturday evening, and when the occupants of one of the vehicles got out to assess the damage, they were struck by another car.

According to a report by WKRN.com, a total of three people who were struck by the vehicle suffered critical injuries and were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, while a fourth victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center.

A report by Metro police indicates that three of the victims were occupants of a vehicle that was involved in the initial accident, while a fourth victim was a witness who stopped to help.

No information has been released about the victims’ names or ages, and the accident is still under investigation at this time.

How Can You Stay Safe after an Accident?

As stressful and frightening as accidents are, the potential for being involved in a second accident immediately after the first is a very real possibility—especially if the initial crash occurred on a busy and high-speed highway or interstate. After an accident, you or your passengers may be injured, and getting medical attention and avoiding further injury should always be your top priority.

To help reduce your risks of being involved in a secondary accident after a car or truck crash and to protect your health and well-being, do your best to follow these tips:

  • Call 911 right away.

The sooner you call 911, the sooner you, your passengers, and the occupants of other vehicles can receive medical treatment. When you’re on the phone with the 911 dispatcher, make sure you provide as much relevant information as possible, such as your location, the number of vehicles involved, nearby landmarks, and the severity of injuries.

  • Stay inside your vehicle if you’re near traffic.

Traffic doesn’t always stop for accidents. In many cases, accidents that are confined to one lane or the shoulder of the road result in drivers simply moving over and continuing on their way. Because traffic may not halt or be rerouted until police arrive, the safest place to be after an accident is inside your vehicle.

  • Move your vehicle to the side of the road if possible.

If your accident occurred in the middle of the road and is blocking traffic, try to start your vehicle and move it to the side or shoulder of the road to get out of harm’s way. Tennessee law protects drivers who move their vehicles after accidents in an effort to keep traffic moving and to protect auto accident victims. However, it’s important to note that you should never move victims who are seriously injured after crashes.

  • Cooperate with paramedics and go to the hospital.

When emergency medical responders arrive at the scene, they will evaluate you and other victims for signs of trauma and injury. Allow them to conduct a full examination, and make sure you get treated by a physician, even if you don’t think you were seriously injured. Getting a full medical work-up after a car accident not only helps rule out potentially serious internal injuries, but it also creates valuable evidence in the event that you file a claim for compensation.

The seconds, minutes, hours, and even days after auto accidents can be confusing and can seem like a blur for many victims. Knowing what to do and how to take the right steps after accidents can make a big difference both in terms of protecting your health and preventing future complications and injuries. At Matt Hardin Law, we know that getting out of harm’s way, staying inside your vehicle, and getting medical attention right away can make a big difference in both short-term and long-term prognoses for car accident victims.
