Nashville Man Arrested After Causing Accident While Intoxicated

A 26-year-old man was arrested in downtown Nashville early Tuesday after he crashed his vehicle into a car and then failed a sobriety test at the scene of the accident.

According to a report by wkrn.com, the accident occurred when the man was traveling on Shelby Avenue in his SUV and attempted to turn onto Interstate Drive shortly after midnight. Nashville Metro Police said that as he was turning, he collided with another car, causing an occupant of that vehicle to suffer injuries.

Reports that the victim of the accident was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

When police arrived on the scene of the accident, they noticed the man’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot and that he had difficulty maintaining his balance.

After questioning the man, he admitted to officers that he had been drinking alcohol before the crash. Police also found marijuana in his vehicle behind the passenger seat.

Upon failing the field sobriety test, the man was arrested and taken to jail on charges of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.

The Nashville car accident attorneys at Matt Hardin Law hope the victim of this accident experiences and complete recover from his or her injuries.

The Consequences of Driving While Intoxicated

There is no excuse for drinking or driving while intoxicated. Our legal team has seen the consequences of when people decide to get behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs or prescription medications, and the results are often life-changing and even deadly. Some of the most serious consequences of driving under the influence include:

  • Increased risk of causing an accident

Alcohol and drugs—including certain prescription medications—can significantly impair judgment, blur vision, and decrease reaction times. When combined, those effects can significantly increase the chances of being involved in or causing a drunk driving accident. Drivers under the influence experience profound difficulty doing even routine driving tasks, and that can turn ordinary trips home into deadly catastrophes.

  • Loss of license and jail time

Because driving is a privilege and not a right in this country, drivers who are caught behind the wheel while intoxicated can lose their licenses for long periods of time—often for one year or longer. In addition, charges like driving under the influence, reckless driving, and driving while intoxicated can have serious legal consequences, including huge fines and even mandatory jail or prison time.

  • Forfeited chance of receiving compensation for the accident

Drivers who are involved in accidents often file claims for compensation for their medical bills and lost wages—but drivers who were intoxicated at the time of their accidents forfeit those rights. That means those drivers are on their own when it comes to paying for medical bills, lost wages, and vehicle repair costs.

  • Chance of getting sued

The victims of accidents that were caused due to the consumption of alcohol or drugs can file lawsuits against the intoxicated drivers. For the drivers, this means additional court dates and expensive punitive and civil damages in addition to the fines they face from their criminal charges.

At Matt Hardin Law, we have no sympathy for people who decide to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking alcohol or using drugs. We know all too well how these decisions can ruin lives, and it’s our goal to hold those people responsible for the damage they cause to their victims.
