Nashville Neighborhood Residents Concerned about Speeding Drivers

Residents in neighborhoods throughout Nashville have growing concerns about the number of drivers who speed on residential roads—especially now that children are out of school for the summer and playing near those areas.

WKRN.com reports that some residents say they see vehicles traveling around 55 miles per hour in areas with speed limits of 30 miles per hour.

Most residential neighborhoods are equipped with multiple signs indicating that drivers should reduce their speed. These signs include traditional speed limit signs, signs that indicate children may be playing nearby, signs that indicate it’s a residential area, and even painted speed limits on the roadway itself.

Some residents believe that the increase in speeding traffic is due to drivers using residential roads as a way to bypass heavy traffic on nearby main roads.

A spokesperson with Metro Police says that residents who see drivers speeding through their neighborhoods should contact law enforcement and alert them of the issue.

In response to calls about speeding and drivers violating traffic laws, the MNPD will send patrol cars to monitor the area and increase speed limit and other traffic law enforcement efforts.

Important Facts All Drivers Should Know about Speeding

With the increased emphasis on things like drunk driving and distracted driving, it can be easy for some drivers to forget that one of the most common traffic violations—speeding—can also be one of the most dangerous.

Some important facts to know about speeding and its effect on road safety include the following:

  • Speeding is a factor in more than half of all crashes involving teenagers. Teens are among the most at-risk groups when it comes to car accidents, and driving above the speed limit only increases their risk of being involved in serious accidents.
  • Speeding is dangerous because it both increases braking distance while decreasing the amount of time drivers have to react. Rear-end accidents are commonly caused when drivers speed and the vehicles in front of them suddenly slow down. They are then unable to react in time—and their vehicles are unable to fully slow down—causing a potentially serious collision.
  • When teens are involved in car accidents that are caused by driver error, speeding is a factor is nearly one out of four of these types of crashes. Any mistake made behind the wheel is only amplified when a vehicle is exceeding the speed limit—especially when the driver is inexperienced.
  • Accidents are six times more likely to occur when drivers travel at speeds that are 25 percent or greater than the posted speed limit. Examples of this include traveling 44 mph in a 35 mph zone, 69 mph in a 55 mph zone, and 88 mph in a 70 mph zone.
  • Speeding is the top traffic violation associated with fatal car accidents, and the average American is more likely to be involved in a car crash than to be a victim of a crime. Because car accidents are so prevalent, it’s vital that drivers do their part to make roadways safer by always traveling at or below the speed limit.

These facts help highlight the dangers associated with traveling over the speed limit. At Matt Hardin Law, we urge all drivers to always be on the lookout for speed limit signs and to never exceed the posted limits. Speeding not only puts drivers at risk of getting a citation and a fine, but it also significantly increases their risks of being involved in an accident and suffering serious injuries.
