Pedestrian Accident in South Nashville Causes Man to Suffer Serious Injuries

A man was struck by a vehicle while walking in South Nashville Monday evening and suffered serious injuries.

According to a report by wkrn.com, the accident occurred just before midnight on Murfreesboro Pike near the Briley Parkway intersection south of downtown Nashville.

Metro Nashville Police officers who responded to the scene of the accident told reporters with WKRN that the accident occurred on a dark stretch of the roadway and that the victim was also wearing dark clothing, making him difficult to see.

The man who struck the victim was driving an SUV at the time of the accident and isn’t currently facing any charges in relation to striking the pedestrian.

Although the victim suffered severe injuries and was left in critical condition as a result of the accident, an update on his condition isn’t available at this time.

The Nashville car accident lawyers at Matt Hardin Law hope the man experiences a quick and complete recovery from the injuries he suffered in this accident.

Safety Tips for Walking at Night

Walking on the roadside can be risky no matter at all hours of the day, but the risks of being involved in a pedestrian accident increase significantly at night or during inclement weather. Although it’s best to avoid walking in areas that don’t have spacious sidewalks or designated areas for pedestrian, we know that’s not always possible. If you have to walk at night, do your best to follow these tips to reduce your risks:

  • Wear brightly colored or reflective clothing.

Walking at night or dark clothing can make it difficult or even impossible for drivers to see you until their lights shine directly on you. That means that even a brief lapse of concentration can cause a driver to drift a few feet towards the edge of the road, putting you at major risk of getting struck by their vehicle and suffering severe injuries. By wearing bright and reflective clothing, you’ll make your presence known several hundred feet away from the vehicle, as the driver will be able to quickly see you.

  • Only walk in areas that are well-lit with street lights.

If possible, stick to sidewalks and roadsides that are illuminated with street lights. In addition to wearing brightly colored and reflective clothing, walking in areas that are well-lit will also give drivers advance warning of your presence and help them stay alert and avoid driving near you or on the shoulder of the road where you are walking.

  • Walk towards the flow of traffic.

Even if you follow the precautions above, you still need to be prepared for the possibility that a driver won’t see you and that you’ll have to take your safety into your own hands. That’s why walking towards traffic is so important. By seeing vehicle’s headlights from a safe distance, you’ll know where the vehicles are and have plenty of time to react if you think a vehicle might encroach on your space on the sidewalk or shoulder of the road.

Walking can be great exercise and is a healthy way to get around town, but it’s not without serious risks—especially in areas that don’t have designated walkways for pedestrians.
