Police Reconstructing Fatal Accident Scene in Clarksville on Friday

Drivers may experience traffic delays at the intersection of Trenton Road and 101st Airborne Division Parkway in Clarksville on Friday afternoon as police work to reconstruct the scene of a fatal accident that occurred in November 2015.

According to a report by Clarksville Now, the reconstruction began at 10 a.m. and is a joint effort by the Clarksville Police Department and the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The accident they are reconstructing occurred on Nov. 14 of last year and killed one person and injured another. A soldier from Fort Campbell was indicted for his role in the crash.

Police say that the reconstruction will take several hours to complete, and that drivers should expect minor to major delays as workers complete the process. Because of the expected delays, commuters are advised to avoid the area if possible and to find alternate routes to their destinations.

In addition to being aware of delays, police are also urging drivers to be aware of the presence of police officers and TDOT employees in the area who may be in the roadway directing traffic. All drivers should reduce their speed and proceed through the accident reconstruction area with caution.

What Information Is Available after Accident Reconstructions?

Reconstructing an accident is an important step in gathering evidence and determining the sequence of events that led to the collision. Without accident reconstruction, it can be difficult to prove what happened and at what time, as the memories and recollections of victims and witnesses may be unreliable and contradictory.

Both law enforcement and auto accident attorneys use accident reconstruction experts to gather and analyze important evidence and information about car accidents, including:

  • Potential driver errors that may have led to the accident

Proving fault is one of the most important aspects of an accident scene investigation, and reconstructions can help pinpoint which driver may have played a role in causing the accident. Analyzing skid marks and impact points on specific vehicles can help investigators determine if a driver was speeding, failed to yield, or ran a red light at an intersection.

  • Roadway defects that caused a driver to lose control

Although most accidents are caused by driver error, a large number are also caused by defects in roadways. Whether they are design flaws or hazards caused by poor road maintenance, reconstructing an accident scene can help investigators analyze a collision from all possible angles and determine if something like a pot hole or a slick path of road contributed to the accident.

  • Physics-based data that can disprove initial witness statements about the accident

After an accident, there can be a number of conflicting reports regarding who was at fault. Physics-based accident reconstructions can help rule out victim and witness statements that are inaccurate. Information like the initial and final positions of the vehicles involved in the accident, the number of vehicles involved in the accident, and the speed the vehicles were traveling when they collided can all be collected from an accident reconstruction.

Auto accident reconstructions can be extremely valuable for victims of car crashes—especially if they weren’t at fault but are having trouble getting settlements from their insurance companies. The data produced by accident reconstructions can be used in conjunction with other evidence—including photographs of vehicular damage, crash scene debris, and damage to objects near the crash scene—to paint a more complete picture of what happened in the moments leading up to the collision.
