Rescue Crews Pull 3 People to Safety after Multi-Vehicle Accident in Lebanon
An accident involving multiple vehicles in Lebanon, Tennessee, Saturday afternoon resulted in emergency crews having to extricate three injured victims from their vehicles.
A report by wsmv.com says that the accident occurred on Highway 109 near Spence Creek when a car traveling northbound was attempting to turn left when it was hit from behind by a pickup truck. The impact of the collision caused the car to be pushed forward into traffic where it ended up in the path oncoming vehicle. Three people were inside the car that was hit from behind and pushed into traffic, and all three had to be pulled from the vehicle by emergency responders.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says that the victims suffered injuries as a result of the accident, but none of their injuries appeared to be serious or life-threatening. The THP also stated that there was only one person in each of the other two vehicles that were involved and neither of those drivers suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident.
Tips for Avoiding Multi-Vehicle Accidents
When most people think of car accidents, they think of accidents that involve only one or two vehicles. But many accidents involve three or more vehicles—especially when they occur in heavy traffic or on roadways with narrow lanes and very little space between vehicles. While it’s impossible to completely eliminate your risk of being involved in a multi-vehicle accident, there are a few things you can do to lessen your chances, such as:
If you’re attempting to turn left at an intersection, make sure your wheels are pointed straight ahead. If you wait to turn with your wheels pointed left towards the intersection, you can get pushed into oncoming traffic if another vehicle strikes you from behind. By keeping your wheels pointed straight ahead, you will be far less likely to be struck by another vehicle in that situation.
It’s human nature to want to see what happened when you pass the scene of an accident, but doing so can put you at risk of being involved in a multi-car pile-up. Secondary accidents occurring near the scene of other accidents are common due to drivers being distracted by the presence of emergency responders and taking their minds and eyes off the road momentarily. Because there’s often heavy traffic surrounding accident scenes, a single collision can quickly turn into an accident involving multiple vehicles.
Anything that reduces your tire’s traction on the roadway—including snow, ice, and heavy rain—can significantly increase your chances of both causing an accident and that accident involving multiple vehicles. All it takes is a single moment of losing control of your vehicle to strike one or more other cars near you on the roadway. Once that happens, chain-reaction crashes are common, especially when road conditions are poor and traction is reduced.
Avoiding multi-vehicle accidents involves taking the same precautions as avoiding any type of accident. By simply staying alert, being aware of the position of your vehicle when it’s in motion and stopped, and exercising extreme caution when road conditions are less than ideal, you can significantly reduce your risks of causing or being involved in a multi-vehicle accident.
