Earlier this month in Shelby County, a school-bus accident on Austin Peay sent 11 people to the hospital, including 10 students. According to a report by one local news source, the accident occurred on Old Brownsville Road at around 3 p.m. on a Monday afternoon.
Evidently, the bus unexpectedly crossed the center median and side-swiped a tractor-trailer carrying construction equipment. The bus, which had 40 students on board, was badly damaged in the accident. One student’s account of the accident is as follows: “Next thing I know, the bus just flew off the road. And everybody was just going from side to side. I saw people just hitting their heads, bleeding. Then I looked to the front of the bus, and that whole…the side of that was completely gone.”
Students told reporters that the driver of the bus was unconscious after the accident. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and told reporters that the driver of the bus may face charges for her role in the accident.
Unexplained Accidents Are Often Related to Driver Negligence
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is still in the midst of an investigation into why the bus crossed the center line. However, often these “unexplained” accidents involved some kind of driver negligence. For example, the driver of the bus may have been extremely tired and fallen asleep at the wheel, or perhaps the driver was texting on a cell phone or on the bus radio system.
Whatever the case, the Highway Patrol’s investigation may or may not uncover the truth behind what caused the accident. For the parents of the injured students aboard the bus, this may be an unsatisfactory resolution.
