Slick Roads Cause Multiple Robertson County Truck Accidents in Recent Days

An accident involving a tractor-trailer blocked traffic on Interstate 65 South in Robertson County on Monday.

According to a report by the Tennessean and information provided by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the accident occurred just before 11 a.m. near mile marker 116 and blocked at least one lane of traffic in the southbound lanes of the interstate. Northbound traffic was also delayed due to the accident.

It’s unclear as this time if anyone was hurt in the accident, and it is still under investigation. The crash scene is expected to be cleared by 1 p.m.

Roads throughout Robertson County were slick and icy over the weekend, and multiple accidents were reported on Saturday and Sunday. Three separate accidents involving a horse trailer and two semi-trucks occurred Sunday evening around 6:30 p.m. on I-65 South, and more minor accidents were reported Monday morning.

The weekend accidents were due to a mixture of snow and ice that had accumulated on roadways throughout the county, but most of it had melted or washed away by Monday morning. No serious injuries were reported in the weather-related accidents that were reported over the weekend.

Truck Accident Facts All Drivers Should Know

The widespread availability of consumer goods—whether it’s food, clothing, or household electronics—depends on millions of tractor-trailers and other large trucks traveling on highways and interstates in the United States on a daily basis.

Big trucks are essential parts of the modern economy, but their weight and size can make them dangerous during accidents. Truck drivers, owners, and companies are responsible for taking steps to stay safe, but accidents happen every day for a wide variety of reasons.

Here are some important facts about truck accidents to keep in mind when you’re driving near big trucks and other commercial vehicles:

  • Truck drivers are safer during accidents than occupants of other vehicles.

In 2014, 2,485 people in standard passenger vehicles were killed as a result of accidents involving tractor-trailers. An additional 531 people who were riding motorcycles, bicycles, or walking were killed as a result of these accidents. A total of 587 truck drivers were killed in the same number of accidents. That means 83 percent of the victims of truck accidents are people in other vehicles, on motorcycles and bicycles, or pedestrians.

  • Truck accidents are most commonly caused by one or more out of three common factors.

When a truck accident occurs, investigators often focus on three common factors to determine what caused the crash: driver fatigue, failure to maintain or repair the truck, and distracted driving. Safely driving trucks requires drivers to be alert and focused on the roadway at all times, and it also requires making sure trucks are safe to drive for long distances. Failure to comply with any of these standards can be considered negligence.

  • Truck accidents injure around 100,000 people every year.

In 2012, 104,000 people suffered injuries as a result of being involved in truck accidents. In 2013, another 95,000 people were hurt in accidents with tractor-trailers, semi-trucks, and other large commercial vehicles. In many cases, the injuries that people suffer in truck accidents are debilitating and disabling and may prevent them from working or living their lives the way they did before their accidents.

The consumer-based economy in the United States and Middle Tennessee shows no sign of slowing down in the near future, and that means the demand for big trucks will only increase. As the number of large trucks on highways and interstates increases year after year, it’s important for drivers to remain extremely cautious when driving near these large vehicles and to understand the risks that they can pose to people in standard passenger vehicles.
