Speeding Drivers Create Risks for Nashville Pedestrians and Cyclists

The director of Walk Bike Nashville says that the city is experiencing growing pains due to the increased number of pedestrians and cyclists on roadways in the area, and drivers who speed through crosswalks make it more difficult for those people to safely cross streets.

According to a report by WKRN.com, drivers frequently speed through crosswalks in Nashville—even those that have signs posted warning drivers to yield to pedestrians and that doing so is required by state law.

Crossing guards are posted at intersections near school zones throughout the city, but some intersections have only traffic lights and walk signals for pedestrians. Many others have no traffic protection for pedestrians at all.

Students and employees at Vanderbilt University and at nearby businesses say that drivers frequently ignore crosswalks and pedestrians’ right of way on 21st Avenue South near the north end of campus.

Walk Bike Nashville’s director says that some Nashville residents need to change their thought process and mentality when driving due to the increased number of pedestrians and bicyclists in the city in recent years.

In addition, pedestrians also need to stay focused on their own safety. A spokesperson with the Nashville Metro Police told reporters that the majority of pedestrian accidents occur when people attempt to cross streets outside of designated crosswalks.

How to Safely Share the Road with Pedestrians and Cyclists while Driving

Although the vast majority of people using the roadways in Nashville and Davidson County are behind the wheels of cars, trucks, and SUVs, a sizable number are traveling on foot or on bicycles. Both pedestrians and cyclists have the right to use public roadways, and it’s important for drivers to both respect their presence and learn how to safely drive near them.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that drivers follow these safety tips at all times to reduce the risks that pedestrians and bicyclists face:

  • Be on the lookout for pedestrians at all times when you’re behind the wheel.

Although it’s important to be on high alert when driving near areas where pedestrians and bicyclists are likely to be—including school zones, parking lots, and residential areas—it’s equally important to realize that pedestrians can be found on any road and at any time. Whether you’re driving on a busy highway in the morning or on a rural road in the evening, remember that a pedestrian could be just around the corner.

  • Be prepared to slow down or stop when approaching crosswalks.

Even if you don’t see flashing lights or signs indicating that you need to stop, it’s a good idea to anticipate the presence of pedestrians when you approach a crosswalk—especially if visibility is limited. Never pass a vehicle that’s stopped or slowing down at a crosswalk, as the driver may be letting pedestrians that you can’t see walk across the street.

  • Be cautious when backing up in driveways or in parking lots.

Many pedestrian accidents occur at low speeds. Most vehicles move at low speeds in driveways and parking lots, but these places can be dangerous for pedestrians due to drivers’ limited visibility, particularly when they are driving in reverse. When backing up in a driveway or a parking lot, turn on your lights, check all of your mirrors, and drive slowly. Being extra cautious when traveling in reverse can help prevent serious pedestrian and bicycle accidents.

Because of their overall lack of protection on the roadway, pedestrians and bicyclists who are struck by vehicles frequently suffer injuries that are painful and disabling. Many are unable to return to work for weeks, months, or even years after their accidents. At Matt Hardin Law, our Nashville bicycle accident lawyers fight hard for the rights of these injured victims, and we do everything in our power to help them get fair compensation.
