TDOT Has 250,000 Tons of Road Salt for Use during Winter Storms
Winter storms are approaching Nashville, and snow is expected to accumulate early Wednesday morning with a small layer of ice forming on roadways in the area.
According to a report by wkrn.com, temperatures will remain below freezing for most of the day on Wednesday, causing roads to become slick and possibly dangerous for drivers as sleet and freezing rain move into the area.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation released a statement today assuring drivers that it is well prepared for the snow, as it has a stockpile of 250,000 tons of salt and two million gallons of salt brine to be used on roadways in Nashville and throughout Middle Tennessee.
A spokesperson said that the department will work to clear highways as quickly as possible after the winter weather hits the area to keep all drivers safe and traffic moving smoothly.
Trucks have already been out on roadways in Nashville preparing them for the possible snow and ice accumulation that’s expected to occur early Wednesday morning.
How Can You Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter Weather?
Being a cautious and alert driver is a huge aspect of staying safe on the roadway during winter weather, but it’s also important to make sure that your vehicle is equipped to handle snow and ice. Being prepared for slick and icy roads and the potential hazards that winter weather brings can be the difference between a safe trip and one that puts you at risk of being involved in an accident or an emergency.
Do your best to follow these three trips to fully prepare your vehicle before you head out on Tennessee’s roadways during winter weather:
Fuel is a precious commodity in the winter—especially when you’re driving on a long distance trip. Winter weather is highly unpredictable, both in terms of the weather itself and the road conditions that it can create. If you get stranded on the highway or interstate, having a full tank of gas means you will be able to run your heat for a longer period of time and stay warm. It will also help you drive long distances when gas stations and other service areas may be closed.
Getting stranded in your vehicle is a rare but possible outcome when driving in severe winter weather. That’s why it’s important to keep emergency supplies inside your vehicle, including a weather radio, water, food, blankets, and extra clothing. Having these supplies on hand can help make an emergency more bearable until the storm subsides or the highway is cleared for traffic.
Having good traction on your tires is vital to stay safe when the roadway is slick due to ice or snow. Worn down tires can lose their grip at any time, causing you to lose control of your vehicle and become at high risk of being involved in an accident. In addition, you should also make sure your tires are properly inflated and within the range recommended by the manufacturer of your vehicle.
The dangers associated with severe winter weather can go beyond just the risk of being involved in an accident. In recent years, thousands of drivers have been left stranded in their vehicles due to major traffic jams caused by sudden accumulation of ice and snow on highways and interstates. Keeping your vehicle in excellent condition and stocked with the essentials can help you stay safe and warm if winter weather causes you to become stranded for a long period of time.
