Two Semi-Trucks Collide On I-40 Westbound

Two semi-trucks were involved in an accident on Interstate 40 westbound near downtown Nashville on Tuesday.

According to a report by jrn.com, the accident occurred just before 11 a.m. at mile marker 208. Reports from the scene of the accident indicate that one of the trucks struck another from behind, causing both to incur serious damage and block traffic.

Police stated that one of the trucks was carrying large appliances, and several of those appliances fell out of the back as a result of the accident. The appliances left debris on the roadway near the Interstate 40 and Interstate 65 junction.

It’s currently unclear if either of the truck drivers suffered injuries in the accident. Police closed all but one lane of Interstate 40 Westbound while cleaning up the accident scene, but the roadway was fully reopened by 2:30 p.m. today.

The Nashville truck accident lawyers at Matt Hardin Law hope that both truck drivers weren’t seriously injured in the accident and are able to return to work soon.

What Makes Truck on Truck Accidents So Dangerous?

When two trucks collide, it’s not just dangerous for the truck drivers—it’s also dangerous for everyone sharing the roadway at the time of the collision. Truck on truck accidents can cause serious accidents and injuries due to:

  • Crashes taking up the roadway

When a single truck is involved in an accident, it’s very likely that it will drift into other lanes of traffic and or even jackknife, possibly striking other vehicles in the process. But when two trucks collide, the effects are multiplied and several vehicles may be affected or even struck by the trucks or their trailers. In addition, oncoming traffic may be unable to stop in time without striking the disabled trucks.

  • Cargo coming loose as a result of the collision

As the above accident highlights, loose cargo coming detached from trucks in accidents is a serious hazard for drivers. In most cases, trucks carry heavy objects or even dangerous chemicals that can cause major damage to other vehicles. In some cases, trucks may even carry flammable materials that can catch on fire due to an accident and even explode.

  • Crash scene debris striking other vehicles

In addition to cargo coming loose and potentially colliding with vehicles, drivers also run the risk of being struck by debris from the accident. Big trucks have more pieces that are capable of breaking off in the event of an accident, from side mirrors and large tires to engine parts and even parts of the trailer itself.
