What Are the Most Common Injuries Caused by Car Accidents?

Car accidents are one of the most common causes of injuries for both children and adults. Victims of car accidents can suffer injuries that range from mild bruising and small cuts to serious brain injuries and even spinal cord injuries that lead to paralysis. At Matt Hardin Law, our Clarksville car accident attorneys know that car accidents have the potential to cause debilitating and life-threatening injuries, and it’s our goal to help victims get the compensation they deserve.

During our 20 years of legal experience, we’ve helped victims with wide variety of car accident-related injuries, including:

  • Head injuries

Concussions are a common injury suffered by car accident victims—even if they’re wearing their seat belts and their vehicles are equipped with airbags and other safety features. Concussions can be caused both by the head impacting a hard surface as well as extreme forces causing the brain to move inside the skull. Mild concussions rarely require long-term treatment, but more severe concussions, also known as traumatic brain injuries, can severely impair victims’ abilities to walk, talk, and even care for themselves without assistance.

  • Neck injuries

The forces generated during car accidents can put enormous pressure on victims’ necks, causing them to move back and forth violently and in an unnatural manner. Mild cases of extreme movement of the neck are called whiplash. People who suffer from whiplash experience severe pain, numbness, and limited mobility, which can interfere with their ability to work. Severe neck injuries can cause damage to the spinal cord, which can result in temporary or permanent paralysis affecting part or all of the body below the neck.

  • Broken bones

While the head and neck are the most vulnerable parts of the body during a car accident, victims are also at high risk of suffering broken bones that may require surgery to repair. Compound fractures of large bones in the body, including the femur, are common during serious car accidents, and victims who suffer injuries like this may require emergency surgery to save the bone’s blood supply. Less severe accidents can still cause multiple broken bones that require months of rest and recovery, making it difficult to continue working.

  • Cuts and lacerations

Car accidents can cause cuts and lacerations that can range in severity from small nicks and abrasions to deep gashes and even severe blood vessels and arteries. Car accident victims who suffer serious cuts may be at risk of suffering life-threatening blood loss, so it’s important for first responders to begin treating them immediately to stop their bleeding before they go into shock.

These are just a few of the most common injuries suffered by car accident victims. When two vehicles collide, the reactions are unpredictable, as are the consequences faced by the occupants of both vehicles. Some drivers and passengers are lucky and are able to walk away without a scratch, while others may experience injuries that are life-threatening and life-changing.
