Van Driver Causes Accident after Swerving in Front of Dump Truck on I-24

The driver of a white Chevy van swerved in front of a dump truck on Interstate 24 in Nashville, Tennessee, Monday morning, causing the dump truck driver to swerve out of the way and his vehicle to roll over onto its side.

A staff report by wkrn.com states that Nashville Metro Police are still looking for the driver of the white Chevy van, as he fled the scene of the accident shortly after the dump truck flipped over.

The accident caused the driver of the dump truck to suffer minor injuries to his arm. As a result of the accident and debris that spilled from the dump truck, emergency workers and police closed the exit 54 ramp on Interstate 24 for two hours to clean up the accident scene before reopening that section of the road around 11 a.m.

Although police have a vague description of the van and driver, they’re still looking for more leads to help in their search at this time.

Matt Hardin Law’s Nashville hit-and-run accident lawyers hope police are able to find the driver of the van who caused this accident and that the driver of the dump truck recovers from his injuries.

What are the Common Causes of Vehicles Overturning?

Vehicles flipping or overturning can be extremely dangerous for drivers and passengers. Whether the accident occurs at a high speed or low speed, victims of rollover accidents are at a high risk of suffering injuries due to shattered glass, being struck by items inside the vehicle, or even being ejected from the vehicle entirely.

Rollover and overturn accidents are commonly caused by a number of factors, such as:

  • Hit-and-run accidents or reckless behavior by other drivers

As the accident above shows, sometimes all it takes to cause a rollover accident is a negligent driver swerving in front of another vehicle or sideswiping it while both vehicles are in motion. Because both of these scenarios often involve the other driver jerking the steering wheel to steer away from the negligent or reckless driver, they may overcorrect and cause their vehicle to overturn.

  • Taking a sharp turn too quickly

Sharp turns have posted speed limits that are much lower than other roadways for good reasons. Not only are they more dangerous to navigate—especially when driving near other vehicles—but they’re also dangerous due to the rollover risks that they pose. Drivers of top-heavy vans, trucks, SUVs, and other large vehicles are at a high risk of rolling over if they take sharp turns too quickly, as the vehicle’s weight can quickly become overloaded on one side.

  • Speeding and driving while intoxicated

Another major risk factor for rollover accidents is when drivers get behind the wheel while intoxicated or drive at speeds far beyond those allowed by law. When combined, speeding and intoxicated driving can be an extremely dangerous and even deadly pairing, as the reduced reaction times intoxicated drivers experience means they experience more intense forces during accidents—including those that cause rollovers.
