A Memphis woman lost her son in 2014 in an auto accident involving a tractor-trailer, and now she’s pushing for legislation that would increase safety standards in the trucking industry.

Per a report by WKRN.com and WATN, her son was fatally injured when his vehicle collided with a semi-truck that was making an illegal U-turn. The woman is traveling to Washington, D.C., this week to speak with legislators about creating a law that would make side safety panels mandatory on all trucks in the U.S.

The Truck Safety Coalition reports that around 4,000 people are killed in semi-truck accidents every year. Many of those fatalities occur when victims’ vehicles collide with or even drive under the sides of trucks and their trailers.

Five vehicles, including a semi-truck, were involved in an accident in the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 on Friday morning.

Per a report by WKRN.com, the accident happened at around 2:30 a.m. near the bell Road exit. Emergency responders closed three lanes of traffic as they worked to clear the scene.

All lanes were reopened to traffic by around 6 a.m. when crews towed away all the affected vehicles. However, the semi-truck’s trailer remained on the shoulder of the road for several hours after the crash.

Mechanic Injured after Dump Truck Rolls Over in Springfield

A 65-year-old mechanic was seriously injured when the dump truck he was driving rolled over in Springfield, Tennessee, Tuesday afternoon.

Per a report by Smokey Barn News, the accident occurred just after 1 p.m. when the man was taking the dump truck for a test drive. Police say the dump truck rolled over when he failed to negotiate a turn while traveling from Old 431 to William A. Batson Blvd.

The truck, which was carrying a load of sand, began to tip as the driver completed the turn. The vehicle then rolled and landed on its roof. Despite the vehicle being overturned and on its roof, the driver managed to escape from the vehicle without help from emergency responders.

Injuries Reported after Vehicle Crashes into Back of Semi-Truck

A vehicle crashed into the back of a semi-truck in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 late Thursday night, causing the vehicle’s driver to suffer injuries.

Per a report by WKRN.com, the accident occurred when the man was traveling west on I-40 in Davidson County near the Linwood Road exit and his vehicle crashed into the back of the semi-truck, which had stopped due to traffic.

The 48-year-old driver of the vehicle was injured during the crash and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center via LifeFlight helicopter to receive treatment for his injuries. His current condition is unknown, as is the cause of the accident. Police briefly closed the interstate to allow the helicopter to land on the roadway.

Rutherford County Residents Ordered to Evacuate after Truck Spills Toxic Chemicals

A semi-truck rolled over in the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 early Wednesday morning at around 3 a.m., causing toxic chemicals to be released onto the roadway and the surrounding area.

Per a report by WKRN.com, the crash occurred when two tractor-trailers collided. Both drivers were injured, with one being transported to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital and the other being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to receive treatment for their injuries.

The semi-truck was hauling chlorine-based pool chemicals when it crashed. Officials with the Rutherford County Emergency Management agency asked motorists to avoid the area, and then expanded their response to include a mandatory evacuation of all residents in the Buchanan Estates area near where the crash occurred.

Fatality Reported after Fiery Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-65

Two semi-trucks collided in the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 in Millersville, Tennessee, early Wednesday, resulting in a fiery scene and the death of one of the drivers.

Per a report by WKRN.com, the accident occurred near Long Hollow Pike just before 5 a.m. when the two semi-trucks collided. The impact of the collision caused the cab of one of the trucks to detach from its trailer, resulting in the truck rolling over in the middle of the road.

Motorists who witnessed the accident stopped their vehicles and immediately ran to help the driver who was stuck inside the overturned truck cabin. When they broke open the truck windows, flames shot out of the cabin, forcing them back away from the truck.

One fatality was reported after a semi-truck accident occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 in Robertson County Thursday morning.

According to a report by WKRN.com, the accident occurred just before noon near the Montgomery County line, State Route 49, and Maxey Road.

Emergency responders closed all westbound lanes and weren’t able to reopen them for traffic until around 3 p.m. Westbound traffic was diverted to an alternate route as crews worked to investigate the crash and clear the scene.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, and police haven’t released information about the victim’s identity or whether anyone else was injured in the accident.

Dump Truck Accident Injures 5 in Warren County

A dump truck collided with a van in McMinnville, Tennessee, Thursday afternoon, causing at least five people to suffer injuries that required treatment at a local hospital.

According to a report by WKRN.com, the accident occurred at around 2 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 56 in Warren County when the dump truck, which was hauling gravel, collided with a passenger van.
